beckie Gibson
Beckie Gibson first began teaching in 1974. In that time, she has accrued 34 years in the classroom and 8 years in administrative positions for a total of 42 years in the field of foreign language education.
Her dedication to the profession is exemplified by her contributions to TFLTA. She first joined the board in 1985 and served as TFLTA President in 1991. Her induction this year marks her retirement from the board after 30 years of service as Conference Secretary and AV Chair. She also served as the Tennessee Chair for ACTFL Conferences in 1990, 1997, and 2007.
In 1988 she was honored as Teacher of the Year by TFLTA, an honor she has received at every school where she has taught. She has mentored new teachers and student teachers. She has worked as Foreign Language Supervisor in the Metro Nashville Public School district and with the State of Tennessee to improve and to promote foreign language education. She has also contributed significantly as a board member of TFLTA.
Patsy Lanigan, a colleague of Ms. Gibson, spoke of her attributes as a fellow teacher and department chair. While working together at Hume-Fogg, the honoree led by empowering her coworkers to take charge of their classrooms and activities without trying to micromanage. Her leadership style helped create confidence and trust within her team, leading to better teachers and greater student output. She has also served as a model of collaboration, helping her colleagues to improve their teaching and thereby increase the success of their students. She has co-facilitated and designed numerous professional workshops and presentations, one of which was awarded Best of Tennessee. Along the way, this generosity of spirit allowed colleagues to transform into dear friends.
For her 40 plus years of service as teacher, mentor, and colleague, the TFLTA Hall of Fame honors Ms. Beckie Gibson as its 2015 inductee.
